What is Allergies (Atopic Dermatitis)?
Canine atopic dermatitis (atopy) is a chronic, heritable inflammatory skin disease caused by hypersensitivity to environmental allergens — pollens, mold, dust mites, and grasses. It is among the most common reasons dogs visit veterinarians and often requires lifelong management. Food allergies may coexist.

- Itching — especially face, paws, armpits, and groin
- Frequent paw licking and chewing
- Recurrent ear infections
- Red, inflamed, or thickened skin
- Hair loss from self-trauma
- Recurring skin infections (bacterial or yeast)
- Seasonal pattern (worse in spring/fall) or year-round
How Is Allergies (Atopic Dermatitis) Diagnosed?
Diagnosis is clinical — based on history, distribution of lesions, and ruling out other causes (fleas, food allergy, skin infections). Intradermal allergy testing or serum allergy testing identifies specific allergens for immunotherapy. Food trials use hydrolyzed or novel protein diets for 8–12 weeks.
Treatment & Cost
Ranges from regular bathing, fatty acid supplements, and antihistamines (mild) to immunotherapy (allergy shots or sublingual drops), cyclosporine, or newer targeted drugs (Apoquel, Cytopoint injection). Cytopoint is a monthly injection; Apoquel is daily oral medication — both highly effective but expensive long-term.
